Extreme shoes may seem to be a relatively recent phenomenon, but they’ve actually been around in one form or another for a very long time. Consider the solid gold sandals entombed with the pharaohs of ancient Egypt. Or the various kinds of platform shoes worn hundreds of years ago in China, Japan, the Ottoman Empire, and Europe. ln fifteenth-century Italy, platform shoes called chopines went as high as twenty inches. At the opposite extreme were the tiny shoes worn by Chinese women who underwent the painful process of foot-binding to achieve the ideal three-inch (or less) length of the golden lotus, as the bound foot was called.
